How’s it going?

It’s February and we’ve been through the round of starting a new year with the same tiresome promises we make at the beginning of the year before reality sets in. I swim at the local Y regularly and a common theme of the 5am group is the influx of new people that fill the lanes. But we know that with the coming of February, it tapers off. So we “suffer” through, remembering of course that having a pool with sparkling heated water is a luxury. So the question is why do we taper off with promises we make to ourselves. I asked a couple of regulars that. It was below 0 out as we waited in the dark, 5am cold. They both agreed that getting up at 4 or 4:30am to spend 30-60 minutes in the water or on the machines changes their whole outlook on the day. My older friend said, “But the problem is, it takes a few weeks to realize that and so it’s grinding it out till you realize one day, you actually look forward to it.” Different motivations to get to that goal but to help, the 20 or so people waiting at the door have created a community there. The gripes about the cold and dark is the beginning of the “you too?” moment that gets us through the grind because our friends are there. So how’s it going and what’s your plan for tomorrow?
